Be Aware of the Extra Stopping Time a Truck Requires
Due to the weight of a large truck, it takes it longer to stop than it does the much, much lighter car. Remember:
- If you are driving in front of a truck, stay far enough ahead so the truck can stop without running into the back of you.
- Do not make a sudden stop.
- Do not suddenly pull in front of the truck. It might not be able to slow down to accommodate you.
- If you pass a truck, do not pull in front of it until you can see the entire truck in your rear-view mirror.
- Do not tailgate. Running into the back of a truck can be fatal. Plus, if you drive too closely to the back of a truck, the driver may not be able to see you there and could stop suddenly, totally unaware of your presence.
Do Not Drive in the Truck Driver’s Blind Spots
Blind spots, also known as “no zones,” are areas where the truck driver cannot see your car. There are four blind spots: directly in front, in back, and along each side of the truck. As much as possible, avoid driving in these blind spots. If you cannot see the truck driver in the side mirror, the driver cannot see your car.
Avoid Driving Near Trucks in Bad Weather
When the weather is bad, when snowing or raining, drivers of large trucks have poor visibility and more difficulty in maneuvering their vehicle. When the roads are wet, it is much harder for them to stop or even slow down.
Additionally, when you try to pass a truck in the rain, water constantly splashes on your windshield, decreasing your visibility. Too much water and your car may skid, which is dangerous for both you and the truck driver.
