Dangers of Distracted Drivers~3 min read
From the moment everyone learns to drive, we are reminded, “Keep your eyes on the road and your mind on your driving,” as well as “You have to drive for yourself as well as everyone else on the road.” The reality is that we often do anything but. That’s why, at the law firm of Springer & Lyle, we represent those who have been injured through the negligence of others, and distracted drivers, regardless of the cause.
The causes of car or truck accidents are numerous, but when a driver causes an accident because of those distractions they need to be held accountable. Cell phone use is becoming a major cause of automobile accidents. Having an activated cell phone in the car while driving is never a good idea. A psychologist has suggested that when a text or call comes, it is like someone tapping on your shoulder. Even if you are engaged in an important activity, like driving, the urge to find out who is on the other end of the line is almost irresistible. But cell phones are not the only distractions that can contribute to collisions.
Here’s a quick list of do’s and don’ts while driving:
- Do keep your eyes on the road at all times.
- Don’t text and drive. (It is illegal in Denton and other communities)
- Maintain a safe distance from traffic ahead.
- Adjust your speed so that you aren’t traveling significantly faster or slower than the flow of traffic.
- Make sure that your tires are properly inflated—under or over-inflated tires can not only affect your fuel mileage, they can also make your vehicle more difficult to handle in an emergency.
- Clean the windshield and other windows to minimize glare.
- Keep your automobile adequately maintained so that the brakes, transmission, and safety systems are properly working.
- Don’t operate a cell phone; if you must use your cell phone, make sure that it is hands free.
- Don’t let the technology of many new vehicles become a toy while driving. Technology is intended to make the drive easier, but there is nothing easy if you are in an accident.
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- Don’t drink and drive.
