Tips to Avoid Holiday Car Accidents~2 min read
Statistics show that between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, more people are on the road than at any other time of the year. It is just common sense that if there are more vehicles on the road, there is more of a chance of being in an accident. At Springer & Lyle, if you plan on traveling during this holiday season, we have some tips for you that can decrease your chances of becoming an injury or fatality statistic.
Tips to Avoid Holiday Car Accidents
In addition to more cars on the road, people are celebrating, letting their guard down, and drinking more alcoholic beverages than normal. Add those factors to the risk of inclement weather, such as rain, snow, sleet, and wind, which is greater than usual, and the chances of being in a tragic accident are increased.
The American Family Insurance group offers these holiday safety tips:
- Get your car serviced before you go. Make sure the tires are in good shape and properly inflated. If your road trip includes driving through snow, make sure you are prepared with chains or snow tires.
- Give yourself enough time to get to your destination so you are not rushed and tempted to speed.
- Avoid distracted driving. This means do not text and drive. No exceptions. Check the law for the states you are driving to see if you are required to only use a hands-free device. Other distractions to avoid include adjusting the radio or Pandora for music, eating, rowdy children, or arguing with passengers.
- Make sure you have a roadside assistance plan if you are traveling. This is often done with an AAA membership or as a benefit provided with your vehicle insurance.
- Check to be sure your insurance coverage is up to date. You do not want any surprises if you are injured.
- Do not drink and drive. At a minimum, make sure you have a designated driver if you do drink. More drunk driving accidents occur during the holiday season than at any other time of the year.
- Do not let anyone else drive drunk. If you are hosting a party, have a plan for dealing with guests who drink too much. Take their keys away and either call a driving service to take them home or provide a place for them to spend the night.
